Clearing out before moving out of your old home
If you ever need to find out just how much “stuff” you’ve accumulated over the years, move to a new home. You’d be surprised at what’s tucked away in a basement corner or in that kitchen cabinet that keeps all the holiday dishware. That’s why when you move, do not be afraid to purge. Moving with clutter is not only overwhelming but also expensive. But if you have things that are nice and new that you won’t use, you may be hesitant to throw them away. Recycle these things instead! Here are five great ways of getting rid of old goods before a house move.
1. Decide What Will Stay and What Will Go
The first step is to sort through your possessions and decide what doesn’t make the cut. Have a hard time doing this? Ask yourself the following questions:
- When did you last use the object in question? If you haven’t used it in over a year, then let it go.
- Do I need this? Why do I need this? We tend to hang onto stuff we love yet we don’t need or even use, especially clothes and shoes. Leave it behind!
- Are you being overly sentimental? Still hanging onto your wedding dress decades later? It’s probably time to recycle it.
Now, just because you’re moving doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything you own! If space or move timing is an issue, you can always get yourself a storage space. We can help arrange this for you.
2. Organize a Garage Sale
If you are planning on getting rid of a lot of items that are in good condition, consider holding a garage sale. It’s satisfying to see your old items in the hands of individuals who’ll cherish and use them — and their money in your pocket. It’s also a great way to cover a portion of your moving costs, too.
To hold a successful garage sale, advertise the event using online platforms including Craigslist and Facebook groups. Post photos of your best items to attract buyers. In case you have a lot of items for kids, you can post your garage sale in groups that interest local parents.
3. Sell Items Online and Make Additional Money
Local trade/sell/ buy groups are ideal options if you don’t want to pack your possessions and pay for shipping or storage. There’s a wealth of resale sites you can use. Try eBay, ThredUp, Poshmark, and Kidizen.
4. Donate Items You Won’t Sell
When you’ve sold what you can, donate what remains to charity. Make sure that the products are in good condition, clean, and can be used. For tax purposes, take note of all the products you’re donating and get a receipt or documentation of your donation from the charity.
5. Recycle What You Won’t Donate or Sell
Instead of tossing what you can’t sell, set some time to isolate recyclables. Find local drop-off recycling centres to recycle batteries, carpet, old electronics, and fabric.
The Bottom Line
Donate toys, kitchen supplies, bedding, furniture, and clothing to consignment shops, non-profit stores, or shelters and support agencies. Take office supplies and books to bookstores, literacy groups, and libraries. Yes, when you move, you want to get rid of things you don’t need or want. But just because you don’t want or need them doesn’t mean someone else can’t use them.
